Overheard at the Clinic – part 1

There are many myths and misconceptions about Lymphoedema, Manual Lymph Drainage (sometimes referred to as Lymphatic Drainage Massage) and the do’s and don’ts if you have issues with your lymphatic system.

So, based on the questions and statements I hear frequently in my clinic, I’ve decided to address some of these points with the ‘Overheard in the Clinic’ blog series.

Part 1 – “I didn’t think I needed MLD, because my Lymphoedema wasn’t that bad.”

I hear this one a lot. And sadly, people are often told that they don’t need MLD if there’s no swelling or if the swelling ‘isn’t that bad’.

You know your body better than anyone, and often the first signs of a disruption to the lymphatic system, post-lymph node dissection, for example, are sensations rather than visual signs. You may feel that something is not quite right, maybe your arm or leg feels heavy or tight, or you have some weird tingling going on…

Never ignore your gut feeling. If it feels like something might be going on, why wait? If you are at risk of developing lymphoedema, due to surgery, treatment for cancer, injury or genetics, why wait, and wonder, and worry? Book in with a registered MLD therapist, who will talk you through all of the do’s and don’ts to help you take the reins and get some control back.

I educate all my clients about body brushing or simple lymph drainage (specific to their needs), compression therapy, things to avoid, things to be cautious about, things to get involved in that will keep lymphoedema at bay for as long as possible, or reduce any swelling/oedema that has already developed. And you can avail of this service through a virtual consultation if you like. Simply get in touch to book. You don’t even have to leave home!

Knowledge is power people… I know it can feel scary, as it can feel like another problem to deal with that you weren’t prepared for and don’t want to think about. But I promise you’ll feel better when you understand more about what’s happening and why, as well as how to look after yourself at home, while travelling, during times of stress, etc.

And I’ll let you into a little secret… MLD is a very relaxing treatment. Many people fall asleep when they are having a treatment with me. So you’ve nothing to loose! Worst case scenario you can tick the self-care box and feel relaxed and confident that you’ve done something good for your body that was actually enjoyable…!

I’m sure you’ve earned it!
